TEASER - SECTION, COMMONS
Birkoff is clearly agitated. He watches the monitors, worried about
something.
Birkoff: What is this?
Roberta: It's the number table you wanted.
Birkoff: Are you an idiot? Are you an idiot?
I wanted you to cycle it through, not give it to me!
Roberta: Sorry
Birkoff: Bonehead. (to someone
else) NO! We already tried those. What's wrong with you people? Why
don't you just go home? Worthless...
Nobody moves.
Birkoff: (to everybody) I mean it!
Get out of here!
The operatives move out of the room. Operations is watching this from
the perch.
Birkoff: (mumbles) Only
people whose brains are on tour...
He sighs, takes his glasses off, watches some Matrix-type numbers
scrawling on the screen.
MADELINE'S OFFICE
Operations comes in.
Operations: I've been as
accommodating as I can be. This has got to stop.
Madeline: We've come so
far. Another few hours won't make any difference.
Operations: Why can't he hand it
of to somebody else?
Madeline: We've tried. Birkoff is
the only one who has any idea of how to approach this thing. It's an
unusual code.
Operations: But is it worth
holding up dozens of other operations that need his attention?
Madeline: We've tried for two
years to get sourced into this group. These people are extremely
careful. We were lucky to even intercept the communication.
Operations: Fine. But when does it
end?
Madeline: Give him until tomorrow
morning.
Operations: No more than that.
COMMONS
Birkoff gets up and away from the computers to lie down on the floor
directly under the perch. Operations is watching again. The image
moves up from Birkoff's fusing it with the code, turning, then zooms
on him again. He has found it. All the certain, he gets up, and enters
a bunch of commands, a pleased smile on his face. The code is
broken.
Birkoff: Yeah!
He looks around for someone to celebrate this with, um
. . . unfortunately, he sent everybody home?!
NIKITA'S APARTMENT
A man in his forties is in Nikita's apartment. We learn that his name
is Barrie, Nikita's new neighbor.
Barrie: My younger seems to be Ok
with it, you know, having everything rolled up and all, it's my
daughter I'm worried about. She doesn't wanna talk about it, and you
know, it concerns me because I'm a big believer in communication.
Nikita: How often do you see
them?
Barrie: A couple of times a
month. Unless Denise wants them to spend time with her new
boyfriend.
Nikita: So how long have you been
separated for?
Barrie: Well, you see, I lost my
job in September, so since October.
Nikita: What now?
Barrie: I'm gonna get a job. And
then I'm gonna get Denise back. That sounds crazy, doesn't it?
Nikita: At least you have a
plan. Did you want some tea?
Barrie: Oh, no, no, I gotta get back,
I've got tons of boxes to unpack.
Nikita: Well, if you need any
help, just give us a shot.
Barrie: Is everyone in the
building as nice as you are?
Nikita: I don't really know
anybody else.
Barrie: Well, you do now. Thanks
for this, I'll get it back to you.
Nikita: See you, Barrie.
Barrie: Bye, thanks.
Nikita: You're welcome.
BRIEFING
Operations: An explosion at a
soccer match in Manchester, England. A car bomb at a Lima, Peru
embassy. A chartered plane down in Japan. Relatively small incidents,
seemly unrelated. Linked only by the fact that we have been unable to
source them. Birkoff.
Birkoff: I cross correlated the
data on each act, and discovered that each of the detonations was the
result of a trigger communication from a DOD satellite.
Walter: Department of Defence?
Birkoff: That's right, somebody
drilled into a friendly satellite and was using for terrorist
acts.
Michael: Why such small incidents
if they can control DOD computers?
Birkoff: That's the scary
part. Somebody's beta testing the software, working out the
kinks.
Operations: And when they do, we
can assume the action will be much more devastating.
Walter: Why don't we just take out
the satellite?
Operations: We have, but the same
techniques can be used on others. In the meantime, Birkoff has exacted
the location from the group's last encoded command set. (To
Michael) Work up an approach strategy.
Michael: What mode?
Operations: Bring back as many as
you can. Let's find out who these people are.
MISSION - last encoded command set
In the van, before they go into the building, Michael is giving some
last-minute instructions.
Michael: The building is
stand-alone, 4500 square meters, mostly space. Birkoff, how many
bodies are you reading?
Birkoff: Right now I see 12 plus
transmitters and computers. It would be nice if you could get some of
that stuff back intact.
Michael: Assume a high density
defense. We'll strike quickly. Teams 2 and 3 stay outside. Cover the
retreat.
They go into the building.
Michael: Team 1 report.
Operative: There's no one
here.
Birkoff: I pick up 12
bodies. Someone's there. I just got you and Mark. Check it out.
They enter a lab. Birkoff and Michael can see some shadows in the
form of people on their screens, not moving. In the lab we see
human-shaped devices with circuits on them and probably emitting heat
to be mistaken by sensors for real bodies
Birkoff: What is it?
Michael: It's a trap.
The lab explodes, killing the entire team.
MADELINE'S OFFICE
Operations is watching the tape of the explosion.
Operations: What does analysis
have to say about what they found on site?
Madeline: Everything was state of
art, no expense was spared.
Operations: Red Cell?
Madeline: No, it doesn't have
their signature. Red Cell wouldn't go to the trouble of fully automate
an operation, they'd use personnel.
Birkoff enters the room.
Birkoff: It was a bogus
code. Probably a decoy.
Operations: Not according to our
friends from the NSA.
Birkoff: What did they say?
Operations: That the information's
in the code. The data you extracted was simply an outer shell, an
protective mechanism.
Birkoff: Could they get at
it?
Madeline: No. They tried but it's
beyond their capabilities.
Operations: This is
unacceptable. There's got to be someone who can do this.
Madeline: Can you find us
someone?
Birkoff: From the outside?
Madeline: Yes.
Birkoff: There's probably no more
than a handful of mathematicians who work in this area at this
level.
Operations: Find them.
Birkoff: Yes, sir.
SYSTEMS
Birkoff is showing a guy's file, text written in Cyrillic letters.
Birkoff: Emil Andruska. The
world's greatest specialist in non linear key theory.
Madeline: Where does he do his
work from?
Birkoff: University of
St. Petersburg.
Michael: Government
affiliations?
Birkoff: Many. He's owned by
Moscow. (switches to a woman's file) Sung-Hee Park. Professor of
Thing Tech in North Korea. She was the brains behind the GMF
algorithm.
Operations: How about somebody
accessible?
Birkoff: Like I told you, it's a
pretty select group. I did pull one match from the west who might be able
to do it. But there are constraints.
Madeline: What kind of
constraints?
Birkoff: He's young. His name is
Greg Hillenger. He graduated from high school at 11, college at 13,
received his Ph.D. after 6 months. Wrote his thesis on nonlinear
principle components. Because he's the youngest tenured professor in
the history of the university, he's highly visible.
Madeline: What makes you think he
can do this?
Birkoff: He's written several
papers on statistical L-trees, exactly the kind of approach that's
needed.
Operations: Family?
Birkoff: Actually he still lives
with his mother.
Operations: Would he cooperate
with the government.
Birkoff: He has turned down work
with NSA and other government agencies who tried to enlist him. His
mother doesn't want her only child designing weapons.
Madeline: Then we'll have to take
him against his will.
Birkoff: That shouldn't be too
difficult. The university send a van to pick him up every morning.
GREG'S HOUSE
Michael and Nikita come up to the house in a van, pretending to be his
university ride. Greg comes out of the house.
Mother: Hey! Hey, where are your
gloves?
Greg: Don't need them.
Mother: I don't want you getting
sick.
Greg: (shows his hand in the
pockets) Ok?
Mother: Don't get smart with
me.
She gives him a lunch brown bag.
Mother: Boy, do you need a
haircut.
Greg: Mom, I gotta go.
Mother: We're having spaghetti for
dinner. Keep your hands warm.
He gets into the van unsuspecting.
Greg: What's going on, Jake?
He notices the doors being locked and realizes something's
wrong. Nikita is in the back, Michael is driving.
Greg: Who the hell are you?
Nikita: Hey Greg, I'm
Nikita. Listen, we're not gonna hurt you, we just need your help,
you'll be back in 24 hours.
Greg: No, no. (he tries to get
out)
Nikita: Greg, I'm sorry. 24 hours,
you'll be back on, before you know. Just take it easy.
SECTION
They bring Greg in with a black hood over his head.
Greg: Hey! Hey you can't do this,
I happen to be an
important person, there's gonna be people looking for me, and not just
the police.
Operations: I'm sorry we had to
do this Greg, we need your assistance for a short time, then you'll
be safely returned.
Greg: Hey, go to hell! I want to
talk to the man in charge.
Operations: I *am* the man in
charge.
Greg: You couldn't be in charge of
my crotch.
Nikita looks away, embarrassed.
Operations: Why hasn't he been
sedated?
Greg: (laughs loudly) Haha!
That's real smart, what are you going to do, fill my brain with beta
blockers then get me to solve a problem? Where am I exactly, stupid
city?
It's fun to see someone talk like that to Operations and not getting
punished. Operations somehow seems to resent Nikita for Greg's
behavior.
Operations: Take him to his room,
tell Madeline he's here.
Nikita: Come on, Greg.
Nikita leads Greg into his new room.
Greg: Ouch! Hey, easy! Ouch!
Nikita: Will you calm down for a
second so I can take the hood off?
Greg: Ah, yes, great, good, take
the hood off, good, finally I get to see this pathetic ... (he
notices a computer in the room, he doesn't seem to think it's
pathetic) What's that? That's not even in the C-shore I've never
seen this or west before. You're gonna have something drawn on the
quant interface?
Nikita: I don't know. Birkoff will
get into that with you.
Greg: Birkoff! Sounds like a
Nazi. But you know what? You're all Nazis. And don't tell me to calm
down, Ok, cause I'm not gonna calm down. I'm not gonna do anything for
anybody till someone lets me talk to my mom, Ok? You know what? Do me a
favor, go say that to the guy with the bullfrog who sorta thinks
he's in charge.
Operations and Madeline are watching this on a surveillance
monitor.
Operations: What do you think?
Madeline: I'll observe him for a
couple of hours. Then we'll have a talk. (she smiles, anticipating
having fun with him)
Operations: I'll tolerate only so
much from this kid. If he doesn't cooperate, wear him down.
She tells him that Birkoff will inform him what he will have to
do.
NIKITA'S APARTMENT
Nikita is asleep. Barrie knocks on her door loudly.
Nikita: Hold on! (she goes to
the door) Barrie. You're up late.
Barrie: Oh, I'm sorry, did I wake
you up?
Nikita: What's up?
Barrie: I've been in my apartment
going through the classifieds and...
Nikita: Any luck?
Barrie: No, not yet, but I'll make
some phone calls tomorrow, you know, so...
Nikita: Yeah. Want to come on
in?
Barrie: I, I really can't I just,
I just uh... uh...
Nikita: Is there something
wrong?
Barrie: Yes and no, not really,
but there's favor I'd like to ask of you.
Nikita: Sure, what is it?
Barrie: Could you hold on to this
for me just for a couple of days?
Nikita: What's in it?
Barrie: Oh, uh, jewelry,
heirlooms, that sort of thing.
Nikita: But I don't
understand.
Barrie: Oh you see, Denise will
send a couple of lawyers tomorrow, they're gonna do a discovery,
they're gonna search the whole place. This divorce is really getting
crazy.
Nikita: I, I'd really rather
not.
Barrie: (sighs) Yeah, I
know what you mean, you can't be too careful. Really, there's nothing
in there spectacular, just you know, some stuff, my dad's coin
collection, this ring, my grandmother bought this ring from Russia in
1897 and I, she never sold it even when things got tough and I...
Nikita: That's pretty.
Barrie: Yeah, I don't know what
it's worth but it means a lot to me. I'd hate for those lawyers to end
up with it.
Nikita: All right.
Barrie: All right, I'll come back
tomorrow after the lawyers have finished fishing around and get it
together, Ok?
Nikita: Ok. Bye.
GREG'S ROOM
Madeline enters the room. She has being studying him via camera from
her office. Greg turns around from his computer.
Madeline: I see you've made
yourself at home.
Greg: I couldn't care less about
this crap, I'm just bored.
Madeline: We don't want that.
Greg: (snorts) There's some
hint that you're gonna tell me what I'm doing here.
Madeline: In a bit.
Greg: Ok. What about Birkoff?
Seymour Birkoff, age 21, 135 lbs, 28 division sys admin for every host
on this land. Should I contiue?
Madeline: (in her
serene-no-way-you-can-rattle-me-voice) We let you roam through an
outer non secured area of the network to give you something to
do.
Greg: Gee, thanks. You think I
can't dig deeper?!
Madeline: If you did, and by some
fluke happen onto something classified, you would never go home
again. Never see your mother again. Your life would be over. We've gone
to a great deal of trouble to protect you. Don't work against
us, Gregory.
Greg: What are you guys? Secret
service? Interpol?
Madeline: We need you to break a
code.
Greg: That's it? Break a code? Why
didn't you just ask me?
Madeline: Couldn't take a chance
that you or your mother might object. It needs to be done
immediately.
Greg: What if I don't do it?
Madeline: You'll do it.
SYSTEMS
Madeline walks up to Birkoff.
Madeline: He's ready.
Birkoff: Great.
Madeline: Birkoff, remember, this
is not about who's smarter then whom.
Birkoff: Yeah, I know.
Madeline: He'll challenge
you. Stay above it. We have an objective and a deadline.
Birkoff nods.
GREG'S ROOM
Greg: Hey, hey, it's Birkoff. Come
on in! How is it going, Birkoff? Good. You know what, I wish you guys
would let me in deeper cause there's really not too much more I can fix
here.
Birkoff: Fix?
Greg: Yeah, you had some bad
modification dates in your master symbol table.
Birkoff: Which one?
Greg: Don't worry, I've fixed
it.
Birkoff: Let's just get to work,
Ok? Then you can go back to your mommy.
Greg: So, you're the guy who couldn't
break the code.
Birkoff: Yeah, I haven't devoted
my entire life to one obscure corner of technology.
Greg: Non-linear of your principle
component. Yeah! I remember that. Six moths actually. It was fun. I
did it at UCLA, I learned to surf that summer.
Birkoff: Here it is.
Greg: Let's take a look. Um, it's
gotta an outer shell, it's a big decoy. *IF* you're 6 years old!!
Birkoff takes a deep breath and tries to hold on to what is remaining
of his patience.
Greg: So, what is this place?
Birkoff: Just work.
Greg: What's the matter, Birkoff?
Can't you chew gum and walk in the same time? What did they do? Kidnap
you, too?
Greg looks up and Birkoff doesn't answer, he just looks down.
Greg: Ok, watch this. (The
computer starts to decode the code.) You like that, um?
Birkoff: The function was in
the program.
Greg: I know. So, what do you
wanna do now?
Birkoff: What do you mean? You're
done?
Greg: Of course not,
Einstein, it's gotta cycle through.
Birkoff: How long is it gonna
take?
Greg: On that piece of crap? I
don't know, 12 hours.
Birkoff: Can it go any faster?
Greg: Not unless you got a
multi-threaded OS hanging in the back cave.
Birkoff: Yeah, we got one (only
one? I got a few of them at work :P). I can't take you
there.
Greg: Patch me in. Read-only, I
can't touch anything. You'll have your code in 2 hours.
Birkoff: I can't give you that
kind of access.
Greg: You're right, it's safer
to have a guy like me outside the firewall, it's not like we're in
a hurry or anything.
Greg relaxes on a Star Trek kind of bed, while Birkoff is thinking
about it. Finally Birkoff picks up a wire from the ceiling and hooks
it to the computer. It almost looks like medical equipment.
Birkoff: All right. I'll go
up. Open the channel.
Greg: Good, I can get out
of here.
Birkoff: That would be nice.
MADELINE'S OFFICE
Michael: I have just heard from
Birkoff. Greg was successful, he broke the code.
Madeline: What did it tell us?
Michael: The transmission was sent
from a small village in South Africa.
Madeline: Good, prepare a
team.
SYSTEMS
Nikita walks up to Birkoff, who is as usual, on the computer.
Nikita: Hey. So the wonder boy
came through.
Birkoff: Yeah.
Nikita: Don't mope, Birkoff, it
doesn't become you.
Birkoff: You know what really bug
me? I was just like him when I was his age, thought I had *all* the
answers.
Nikita: But he does.
Birkoff: No, he doesn't. He's got
everybody fooled. He's an one trick pony.
Nikita: Ok, so when's pony going
home?
Birkoff: That's your job.
Nikita: I'm not on Team 1?
Birkoff: You're Gregy's ride
home.
Nikita: Don't worry, Birkoff, you
are still *my* favorite overachiever.
She stands up, kisses him on the cheek and winks at him. (That was
really sweet of her.)
Nikita goes to Greg's room to pick him up.
Nikita: I got good news, Greg,
you're going home. Greg? Greg?
The room is empty. She goes to the comm..
Nikita: Birkoff, I thought you
said he was in his room. Did someone come to pick him up?
Birkoff: No. Why? Is everything
Ok?
Nikita: Yeah, he's here. Never
mind.
The computer screen flashes a cartoon with the logo "GONE FISHING"
Nikita realizes the consequences if section found out that Greg
managed to get up and saw stuff he was not suppose to. She slips into
Systems, and starts checking all the surveillance cameras. She finally
finds Greg on a catwalk overlooking a team that is planning a
mission.
Nikita grabs Greg from behind, with her hand over his mouth.
Nikita: Listen to me carefully,
has anybody seen you? Yes or no?
Greg shakes his head.
Nikita: This is what I'm gonna
do. I am going to put this hood on your head, we are out of here. If
anybody has found out you have seen this place, you will never leave
here . . . EVER. Do you understand? Do you understand?
Greg nods. Nikita removes her hand from his mouth.
Greg whispers: I don't want to
leave. I don't, I don't want to leave. Have you seen that stuff? They
got 10 time more resources down there then any think tank I ever
wanted me to work with.
Nikita: You are not hearing
me.
Greg: I'm hearing you just fine. I
am never going to get out, blah, blah, blah. But you forget whom I
am. Computers control this whole compound, and who control the
computers? I DO.
Nikita: What about your mother?
Greg: If I miss her, I'll leave. I
can find a way, believe me. But that's going to be a while, cause
I like it here.
Nikita: Do you know what this
place is? Do you have any idea what they do here?
Greg: I don't know. Intelligence
gathering for some multinational corporation. Who cares? Whoever you
are, those are some really expensive toys, you've got enough all ready
dolls to do some really serious damage.
Nikita: You're going home.
Greg: Ok, aren't you forgetting
something, Barbie? I've already seen this place. I'm gonna tell
somebody and they'll make me stay...
She puts the hood back on his head.
Nikita: Say a word, I'll break
your neck. (Greg groans in approval) Good. Walk slowly,
boy.
Greg: Where are we going?
Nikita: I wanna show you
something.
Nikita brings Greg into a room that has a mirrored wall connected to a
white room. Inside a white room, a man is steel chained to a
structure, being tortured by two operatives. He is making these
animalistic noises in pain.
Nikita: You like that? Cause you
better get used to it if you want to hang here. Happens everyday.
Greg: What is he? Some kind of
criminal?
Nikita: No, that's Dave, he works
here.
Greg: Why are they doing that to
him?
Nikita: He made a mistake, had
lunch with an old girlfriend in London.
Greg: I don't get it.
Nikita: They thought maybe he told
her about this place. He probably didn't, but they wanted to make sure
. . . before they kill him.
Greg is in tears.
Nikita: Now we're gonna get back
to your room and get your things, and then we're gonna leave. And
you'll never tell anybody about any of this. Right?
Greg nods.
Nikita and Greg (who is hooded), make their way to the loading
dock. All the sudden, an operative walks in front of them. Nikita
turns around, Madeline and another operative is coming from
behind.
Madeline: Bring the boy.
Greg: No, no, leave me alone.
Madeline takes his hood off.
Greg: What are you doing? I'm
going to see stuff.
Madeline: You already have. I
tried to warn you Greg. Take him.
Greg is lead away by the operatives.
Madeline: So, what do we do about
you now?
Nikita: He's a teenage boy with an
extraordinary mind. Who know what he will accomplish and how many
people will benefit if he lives? You want to lock him up because
that's what the rule book says?
Madeline: Your point is well
taken. But these aren't easy decisions, I don't enjoy making them.
Nikita: I think you do. I think
you go home to bed every night hoping someone will screw up so you can
make your hard decisions.
Madeline: I'll overlook this
incident for now. But we will be watching you more closely.
It looks like she's letting Nikita go because she doesn't want to
appear as cruel as Nikita accused her of being.
MISSION
Michael and his team are on an airplane heading toward the target.
Michael: Birkoff, are you
there?
Birkoff: Are you seeing it
too?
Michael: Why is the pick-up
moving?
Birkoff: I don't know, we're
supposed to be locked on.
Michael: Could the target be
moving?
Birkoff: Not 3 times the speed of
sound.
Michael: What does it mean?
Birkoff: It means, the sequence
Greg extracted from the code is self-modifying.
Michael: A virus?
Birkoff: Could be. Maybe
Amadeus didn't catch it. I'll see if I can separate some clean data,
give me a minute here.
NIKITA'S APARTMENT
Nikita hears noises coming from Barrie's apartment. She opens her door
a fraction, and watches as two men dressed in black come out of his
apartment.
Barrie: No, no, you got the wrong
guy, I gut it straight from the lower if you like ask Rod, not me.
Man: Be back in an hour, you
better have it Barrie.
Nikita closes the door, and opens the box Barrie gave her for
safekeeping. She finds a hidden compartment, and about ½ kilogram of
heroin.
THE PERCH
Greg is brought to Operations.
Operations: Thank you.
Greg: Yeah, thanks.
Operations: That was a stupid
thing you did, Greg. Unfortunately, this place cannot tolerate
mistakes, you've seen that.
Greg: Spare me lecture, old
folks. You're going to let me go or not?
Operations: No, we're not.
Greg: You may want to reconsider
that.
Operations: And why would I want
to do that?
Greg: Ask Birkoff.
Operations: Birkoff?
Birkoff: Sir, I'm sorry. We're in
the middle of multiple anomaly.
Operations: What's wrong?
Birkoff: The decoded sequence is
generating a virus that is bleeding into the system.
Operations: The entire system?
Birkoff: Yeah.
Greg: (smug) I might be
able to fix that for you.
SYSTEMS
Operatives are running around trying to fix the problems caused by the
virus.
Roberta: Team three come in.
Operative: We're not receiving.
Are you there?
Birkoff: Use analog.
Roberta: But it's not secure.
Birkoff: Doesn't matter. All our
digital channels have been corrupted by this thing. Doesn't
acknowledge the central process. Kill it. All native com., find out a
suitable warp out of the narrow band. It's getting worse. Communication
integrity is down to 80%.
Operations: How many planes are in
mission?
Birkoff: Three. Two of them are
grounded.
Operations: And Michael?
Birkoff: He's been holding pattern
outside of York heights. We're still trying to figure out if the
location we've extracted from the code is real.
Operations: Greg said he can make
this problem go away if we let him go.
Birkoff: I'm sorry, I should have
seen this coming.
Operations: This is just a game
for him and we can't let him win. Can you get us out of this?
Birkoff: No, he is too good.
NIKITA'S APARTMENT
Barrie knocks on the door. Nikita is eating an apple
Nikita: Hi Barrie.
Barrie: Hi Nikita, I need, uh, I
need that thing back. (he has a bruise on his forehead)
Nikita: Come on in.
Barrie: I really, I'm in really a
hurry.
Nikita: Sure. (she goes
upstairs to get the box) So why in such a hurry?
Barrie: Oh, it's uh, it's just
been a crazy day. Thank you.
Nikita: I'm listening.
Barrie: Oh no, no, it's just
personal stuff, it's not important.
Nikita: So, how's the kids? Or was
that a lie too? Well, if you want the box back you need to tell me
what's going on.
Barrie: What are you talking
about?
Nikita: Barrie, what are you doing
with half a kilogram of heroin?
Barrie: Look, it's not what you
think, I've never done this before. I lost my job and my family, and
if I can just get enough money to get back on my feet I can get us
back together again.
Nikita: Selling drugs?
Barrie: Just, just this once, just
till I get back on my feet.
Nikita: Then why am I holding it
for you?
Barrie: Ok, I got greedy and I
skimmed a little, I didn't think anybody would notice.
Nikita: They did.
Barrie: It doesn't matter because
I'm just gonna give it back to them and that's gonna be the end of
it.
Nikita: That's crap!
Barrie: I guess I was wrong about
you, I thought you were my friend.
He tries to take the box, Nikita puts her hand on it.
Nikita: I am.
There's a knock on Barrie's door.
Barrie: That's them, Ok, I got to
go now.
Nikita: Hey guys, we're in
here. We got your heroin.
Barrie panics. The guys come into Nikita's apartment.
Dealer: What's going on,
Barrie?
Barrie: You know, I forgot, I left
it in here. Hold on.
He opens the box but the heroin is gone.
Barrie: Where is it?
Nikita: I flushed it down the
toilet.
Barrie: She's kidding, right?
Nikita: No, I'm not. You see, all
the people who sell drugs, they sell it to kids. That makes them
addicted.
Dealer: I don't know who you are,
but you got to come up with those bags right now, Ok?
Nikita: (nods, looks scared,
playing along) Sure, Ok. Can you put down the gun, please? Barrie,
will you tell him to put down the gun?
Nikita dispatches the two thugs.
Nikita: (to Barrie)
Leave. Leave!
Barrie: What?
Nikita: Just pack up your things
and go now.
Barrie: But what's gonna
happen?
Nikita: Go.
She picks up the phone and puts on some shoes. Barrie leaves in a
hurry.
Nikita: Three five seven
black. (it's probably a code) I've been exposed. Send
housekeeping.
GREG'S ROOM
Birkoff: Guess you've heard,
they're letting you go.
Greg: Ha ha, there's a
surprise. Ok, we're out and killed most of the virus. I'm not gonna
kill it all till I'm safe.
Birkoff: Sure.
Greg: And I suppose you don't have
to tell a smart boy like you that if the file is left unattended it's
going to come back worse than before.
Birkoff: I know, Greg, it's your
world, we just live in it.
Greg: You know what? I've never
thought about it like that, Seymour, but you're probably right.
Birkoff throws him his backpack.
Greg: Thanks.
MADELINE'S OFFICE
Operations: Your cover story will
be that you were kidnapped and later recovered by the FBI.
Birkoff: Who were the
kidnappers?
Operations: Bulgarian
nationalists.
Greg: It's not bad. Ok, they
wanted me to help them develop a system for their gamma project. They
were in fight with the NSA.
Madeline: Before we can release
you, you'll have to sign several non-disclosure statements. Then take
a binding oath with an international officer.
Operations: You got a problem with
that?
Greg: It depends on what's in the
statement.
Madeline: I'm sure that if the
language is not to your liking you won't have any difficulty in
suggesting alternatives we can all live with.
Greg: Sure, I'd be happy to help
you out with it.
Operations: Birkoff will be going
with you. As soon as you're back home you'll be giving him the
correction.
Greg: No problemo.
Madeline and Operations look at each other amused and contempt.
GREG'S HOME
Greg's mother come out, crying.
Greg: It's Ok, mom, it's Ok,
I'm right here, right here. Ok.
He types something on Birkoff's laptop.
Greg: It's so simple when you know
what you're doing.
The computer screen shows "virus terminated".
Greg: That's it.
Birkoff: Not yet. Hey, Roberta,
it's me. Check up the file N-6 dot back.
Roberta: Yeah, I can read it.
Birkoff: Are you online to
Johannesburg?
Roberta: We're on.
Birkoff: Ok, you're up and
running. Clear. (to Greg) See you later.
Greg: Yeah, too bad you're stuck
here, I can always use another assistant.
Greg goes to his mother who is surrounded by two section operatives
and hugs her.
Birkoff: Ok, Roberta, it's me
again. I want you to do a warm boot on the entire system.
Roberta: The entire system? If
we're not clean we'll lose too much data.
Birkoff: It's the only way to know
for sure.
Greg: (in the back, to his
mom) They didn't hurt you or anything?
Roberta: Ok. We're up and
running.
Birkoff: Ok, we're done. (he
closes the case of the laptop) Pays off.
Greg notices that the operatives are still surrounding him.
Greg: What are you guys still
doing here?
Nikita: (voice from behind
him) You're going with them.
He turns around and it was his mother speaking. She rips a latex mask
off and it's Nikita.
Nikita: I am sorry Greg, you
should have listened.
Greg: What you're gonna do with
me?
Nikita: We're gonna take you
back.
Greg: For how long?
Nobody answers, but all of their faces say "forever".
Greg: God. What about my mom?
Where's my mom?
Nikita: She won't even know that
we're here.
Greg: Am I ever gonna see her
again?
Nikita doesn't answer, just puts a hand on his shoulder. The answer is
no.
MADELINE'S OFFICE
Operations enters the office.
Operations: Michael just got back
from Johannesburg.
Madeline: And?
Operations: The location was
destroyed. We brought back hostiles.
Madeline: What about the
hardware?
Operations: Restricted. It's being
reverse engineered.
Madeline: Who's behind it?
Operations: Oh, just another group
of insane misfits empowered by technology. Another day at the office?
Madeline smiles.
Operations: What about Hillinger?
Madeline: I am working on an
integration program.
Operations: What is his survival
likelihood?
Madeline: Over 92%, actually. He's
a surprisingly good match.
Operations smile completely drops. He really, really did not like
Greg.
NIKITA'S APARTMENT
Nikita has being working out, probably as a way to work out her
anger. She opens the fridge, grabs the milk and finishes the entire
carton. She throws the empty carton into the garbage. She moves away,
the camera focuses on the milk carton. On the side of the carton was a
picture of Gregory Hillinger's, with the caption "HAVE YOU SEEN ME?"
under it.
