A Time For Every Purpose

MARKETPLACE
It's daylight, and Nikita strolls through a marketplace where vendors
have their wares and merchandise laid out on tables. Crowds mill about
the area, purchasing, and looking over the merchandise. The atmosphere
is bustling energy.
Nikita's manner is somewhat downtrodden as she walks along. She sees
a couple kissing on a bench and stops. She sort of smiles, then moves
on her way. As she walks, an arm suddenly reaches out from the side
and grabs her by the shoulder. Nikita gasps and begins struggling
against the assailant, shoving him back against a nearby concrete
wall. She sees it is Michael. He gasps with pain, and slumps, clearly
injured.
Nikita: Michael?
She sees he is seriously injured.
Nikita: Michael! What happened?
She is supporting him, to keep him upright.
Michael: I got Adam out.
Having said that, he slumps down from the pain, nearly passing
out. Nikita crouches before him, watching him with concern, as he head
lolls forward and he fights the urge to black out. She leads him a
bench, where he sits carefully, still gasping and in pain.
Nikita: Where's Adam?
Michael: It's better if you don't
know.
She is confused, has many questions, but it's clear he's not in any
shape to say much.
Nikita: How'd you get out?
As he tells her, he begins to flash back on the events that
occurred as he rescued Adam. With each memory, he explains.
Flashback: We see Adam sitting alone in the cell at the
Collective Headquarters.
Michael: They showed me where Adam
was.
Flashback: Michael looks at how many guards he has to take
down in order to get to Adam.
Michael: They didn't think I'd
make a move.
Flashback: The two guards turn their backs on Michael.
Michael: But I didn't trust them,
so I... so I took a chance.
Flashback: Michael jumps a nearby guard and takes his gun from him. He
shoots the lock off the cell door. In the meantime, the other two
guards turn back, but Michael shoots both of them down. He kicks open
the cell door, and Adam looks up. Michael holds out his gloved hand to
Adam, who reaches up to take it, saying, “Daddy!” Holding Adam's
hand in one hand, and a gun in the other, Michael begins making his
way through the Collective headquarters. He takes out one man after
another as they encounter them, while Adam looks about at the men
dropping about them with shock.
Michael's face is quiet and drawn, as if the memory is painful. Nikita
touches his shoulder in understanding.
Michael: I took Adam to a safe
place. He'll be fine for a couple of days.
Nikita: (nodding) Are you
sure you haven't been followed?
Michael: Yes. But, they're looking
for me.
Sitting on the bench, she is supporting him, and he is slumped a bit,
gasping from the pain, and clearly not well. Nikita reaches to open
his coat to inspect his wound, and he gasps from her touch.
Nikita: Michael, you're hurt. More
than you want to admit.
He continues to gasp from the pain.
Michael: Take me back to
Section. I can guide a team back to the Collective's headquarters.
Nikita thinks about this, her main concern being that Michael is too
hurt to guide anyone. She doesn't fight him on this though, but rather
helps him to stand, to take him back to Section.
COMM
We see a blonde woman in her 40's striding across the main area of
Section, accompanied by an man. Quinn sits at her workstation in Comm,
while Jason stands before her desk. They are both watching the woman
and man.
Quinn: Who are those two?
Jason: Kelly and Monk from
Oversight. Our lucky runners up.
Quinn: To what?
Jason: Daddy offered Nikita
Operations' post. She turned it down in a big way.
Quinn sits back in her chair, her arms crossed.
Quinn: So... one of those two is
going to be in charge of my life.
Jason: I'm afraid so, darling.
Quinn: Any difference between
them?
Jason takes a seat next to Quinn.
Jason: I worked with both of them
at Oversight. Kelly's a pain. Nothing's ever good enough for him.
Quinn: What about Monk?
Jason: Good woman. Smart, great
attitude, she'd be a good choice.
Quinn raises her eyebrows.
Quinn: Good woman? Great attitude?
Somehow that doesn't sound like you, Jason. Now won't you tell me what
you really think of her?
Jason: She's a jerk too, but I did
a couple of favors for her over at Oversight. She owes me. Big
time. If she takes over, I'll have it pretty cushy.
He smiles, pleased with himself.
Quinn: Ah. The real Jason's
back. So... how you going to rig the election then?
Jason: I don't know yet. I'm gonna talk to Walter. See if he
can help me poison Kelly.
Quinn just grins and shakes her head. Jason leans forward, putting a
finger to his lips to say, "mum's the word". Quinn waves him off, and
he walks off.
MUNITIONS
Walter stands in Munitions, working at his table. His face is spooked,
as he is clearly worried about something. We see that Jason stands
next to him.
Walter: Myra Monk? Are you sure?
Jason: Yeah. You know her?
Walter: All too well.
Walter looks spooked, wide-eyed and nervous.
Jason: What's wrong?
Walter: If she takes over the
Perch, I'm toast. Toast! You can forget the Farm. I'll be sent right
to abeyance. I'll be dead in week!
He leans over his table, hand on his chin. He's agitated. Jason's
face brightens with understanding.
Jason: You did her.
Walter: Worse than that. I didn't
do her.
Jason: You lost me.
Walter: About twenty years ago, I
was assigned to a Spec Ops at Oversight. She was in charge. Well, we
found ourselves in Paris, we had 36 hours downtime, and she insisted
that we spend it in bed.
Jason: What's wrong with that?
Walter: I had other plans!
Jason: Another girl?
Walter: No! A woman. I turned her
down, and for months after that, she put me in every deadly situation
that came along!
Jason is fully amused by this tale. He puts an arm around Walter's
shoulder good-naturedly, not convinced that Walter isn't
over-reacting.
Jason: That was a long time ago.
Walter: Hmmph!
Jason: I'm sure she's over it.
Walter: Oooooh, no! No. You don't
know her.
Jason: Actually, I do. I spent
some time in Oversight, got to know her a bit.
Walter feels hope now. He puts a hand on Jason's shoulder.
Walter: You gotta help me, Jas.
Jason: (mocking) What do
you want me to do?
Walter: Get something on her. Put
it right there, in front of Jones.
Jason: That could backfire on me.
Walter: On you! I
could dead! C'mon, Jas. Help me? Please?
Jason merely regards Walter noncommittally.
VAN ACCESS
The Van Access door swings open. Two Medical personnel walk in, just
as Nikita helps Michael through the tunnel.
Nikita: Get him to Medical.
The two medics take a hold of him on either side, supporting
him, while Nikita enters Section. Quinn waits outside the access door.
Nikita: Where's Jones?
Quinn: In the Perch. He'll do the
profile himself, after I debrief Michael.
Michael and the medics step out of the tunnel, and stop. Michael is
slumped, being supported. He holds his left side.
Michael: No. I need to brief Jones
personally.
Quinn: Why?
Michael: There are certain things
only he will understand.
Quinn: I don't think that's a good
id...
Michael looks at Nikita, cutting off Quinn.
Michael: (to Nikita) I
don't have time for this!
Nikita: (to Quinn) Tell
Jones to meet us in Medical.
Nikita takes Michael's right arm, and helps the nurse lead Michael to
Medical.
MEDICAL
Michael sits on a gurney. He still wears a long brown coat. The nurse
goes to give him a shot in the neck, but he raises his left arm,
blocking her.
Michael: Not yet!
Nikita: At least let them give you
an anesthetic.
Michael: The pain keeps me
focused.
Nikita: (to medics) Come
back in ten minutes.
The medics leave. As they wait for Mr. Jones, Michael sits quietly,
clearly in pain, while Nikita waits silently, concerned but trusting
Michael to know what's best for himself. The door swings open, and
Mr. Jones walks in followed by a bodyguard.
The guard closes the door and stands beside it, while Mr. Jones
stands before Michael.
Mr. Jones: Hello.
Michael shifts his gaze to the bodyguard a moment.
Mr. Jones: I was glad to hear that
Adam is safe.
Michael: Thank you.
Mr. Jones: We'll get you patched
up soon. In the meantime, tell me what you know.
Michael: Refraction sequence will
be in effect soon. If it's not already.
Mr. Jones: And, their failsafe
protocol?
Michael: There are two
contingencies.
Just then a wall monitor beeps, showing that a download is
complete. They look over at it.
Mr. Jones: Ah... I did ask Quinn
to download...
Just then Michael springs from the gurney, rushes the bodyguard, and
slams him in the face, knocking him out. By the time, Nikita reacts,
Michael has the guard's gun aimed at Mr. Jones. Nikita aims her gun at
Michael.
Nikita: (surprised) What
are you doing?
Michael is suddenly standing erect, no longer gasping, but fully in
control of the situation.
Mr. Jones: Well now...
congratulations on your miraculous recovery.
Michael: The Collective still has
Adam.
Nikita is stunned.
Nikita: You lied to me?
Michael: Yes.
She is surprised, but Mr. Jones has it all figured out.
Mr. Jones: They want to make a
trade - me for the boy.
Michael merely holds Nikita's look.
Mr. Jones: Shoot him, Nikita.
Michael: Nikita. It's the only way
to keep Adam alive. Once they've released him, I'll find a way to get
your father out.
Mr. Jones: He has been
consistently deceiving us. Do not trust him!
Nikita continues to look across the room into Michael's eyes, trying
to read him. As she makes her decision, she slowly lowers her gun. Mr.
Jones shakes his head. Michael nods that she made the right
choice. Only now does Michael look at Mr. Jones.
Michael: Let's go.
Nikita looks over to her father, who continues to shake his
head. Michael then opens the door, and leads Mr. Jones out at
gunpoint. Nikita follows.
COLLECTIVE HEADQUARTERS
Haled sits at a table, when his phone beeps.
Haled: Yes?
Michael: (voice) I have
Jones.
Haled: Good. Bring him in.
Michael: No. I want to hand him
off to you, not to Graff.
Haled: (voice) Why?
Michael: I don't trust Graff.
Haled: It doesn't matter who you
trust!
Michael: (voice) You used
to be Graff's equal. Now you work for him. Doesn't that bother you?
Haled: What are you trying to say?
Michael: If you brought in Jones
yourself, things might change.
Haled looks over to where Graff is sitting, giving out
orders. Michael's words have had their impact on Haled.
Graff: (in the background)
No, no. It's my decision and my decision alone.
Haled: I'll send you the location.
Michael: Bring Adam.
Haled: All right.
Michael shuts off his phone.
COMM
Jason sits at Comm watching an overhead monitor. He calls to another
op at the next workstation.
Jason: Perry. Perry!
Perry doesn't even acknowledge him. Jason stands, going over to Perry.
Jason: (singsong) Per-ree!
He stands at Perry's side. Perry looks over to him.
Jason: Perry, I put a hold on that
relay to Two! I want wait for the results of the Athen's operation.
Someone walks up, and Jason turns to find Myra, the woman Walter is
afraid of, standing there.
Myra: No. Send it now.
Jason: Myra.
She stares down Jason.
Myra: Whatever way it falls in
Athens, Two needs that information, and the sooner the better.
She has a confident, no-nonsense, don't mess with me manner.
Myra: Hello, Jason. I trust you
can still be counted on.
Jason steps up to her.
Jason: What are you doing here,
Myra?
Myra: Jones wants Kelly and me to
run Section for a few days. Before he makes his choice.
Jason: Where is Jones? I've been
trying to reach him.
Jason's manner toward Myra is cocky.
Myra: He's been called away for a
few days. I'm covering Comm while he's gone.
Jason: Did he give you a code?
She holds up a disk. Jason takes it from her, and slips it in a
drive. He finds what he's looking for.
Jason: All right.
He swivels his chair to face her.
Jason: I'll forward everything to
you.
He points at her for effect.
Myra: Well, good. Let's talk.
She walks off, and Jason follows. She leads him into Systems, to an
empty area.
Myra: I assume you know what's
going on.
Jason: You and Kelly are both up
for Operations.
Myra: That's right, and I intend
to get it. Can I count on you to help?
Jason: I'm not sure what I can do.
Myra: I want a list. Three
columns: Allies, Detractors, and... Irrelevant.
Jason doesn't seem pleased at the prospect of doing her bidding.
Myra: What's the problem?
Jason: I don't know how to make
those evaluations. Most of these people don't know you.
Myra: You know my politics. You
can do it.
They stare each other down.
Jason: Okay.
Myra smiles triumphantly.
Myra: Good.
She exits the area, leaving Jason alone. She crosses the Main Area,
running into Walter. As she approaches him, her step slows and her
smile fades. She stops before him and looks at him a moment without
mirth, before moving past him dismissively.
As Walter goes to Munitions, his face registers concern that she
hasn't in fact forgiven him.
JONES/ADAM TRADE
We see what appears to be a large, concrete abandoned building. Inside
it, Mr. Jones sits in an empty, concrete room.
Mr. Jones: You know your profile
does not suggest that you would jeopardize global security for any one
person. Not even your son.
As he speaks, Michael cuffs him.
Mr. Jones: Nor does it suggest
that you would encourage Nikita to murder her own father.
Michael just ignores him.
Mr. Jones: You know the Collective
will want you to perform many more tricks...
Michael goes to the door to leave. He stops, looking back to
Mr. Jones.
Mr. Jones: ... before they
release your son. Handing me over is simply the first.
Michael gives no indication that Mr. Jones' words have had an impact.
Michael: If you need anything...
knock.
Michael closes the door on Mr. Jones.
Outside the door, another set of doors opens, and Haled leads in a
group of four men. Michael steps up to meet them.
Michael: Where's my son?
Haled: He's safe.
Michael: We agreed you would bring
him.
Haled: Give me Jones first. There
may be one or two other services we need from you. Then, we'll discuss
the release of the boy.
Michael merely stands before him, saying and doing nothing.
Haled: If you want to see your
son, give us Jones.
Michael: Over there.
They look to the door of the room Michael has stowed Mr.
Jones. Haleds looks to one of his men.
Haled: Open it.
As the man goes to do as ordered, Michael turns to face the door
also. His manner is quiet and thoughtful. As the man gets to the door,
Michael passes a hand over his forehead nervously.
Haled swings open the door, only to find Nikita standing there, her
gun drawn. She shoots the man down. Michael immediately turns and
takes out the other three men, leaving the black Collective colleague
alive. Nikita walks out of the room. Mr. Jones is not in it.
Haled: That was not smart.
Michael rears back his fist and punches Haled in the face, knocking
him to the ground. As he tries to get up, Michael rushes and grabs him
up by the collar, shoving him to a wall. Michael holds a gun beneath
the man's throat.
Michael: Where's my son?
Haled: You just killed him.
Michael: If he dies, you die.
Haled: You think you can trade me
for the boy? Graff won't make that deal.
Michael: Then let's take Graff out
of the equation.
Nikita: With Graff gone, you'll be
in charge. We'll give you the Collective; you give us Adam.
Michael: Or, I can kill you right
now. It's your choice.
Haled: What do you want?
Nikita: When is he vulnerable over
the next twenty-four hours?
Haled thinks over his options, before making his choice.
Haled: He's making a weapons
purchase tomorrow morning.
This satisfies Michael, who releases the man, and shoves him away.
Later on...
They've set up a laptop on a table in the same building. Nikita sits
at the edge of the table, when Michael walks in. He has just stowed
the Collective man somewhere, though we don't see this happen.
Michael: Haled's secured.
He walks over to the laptop.
Nikita: He's been out of the
Collective for a while. What if Graff gets suspicious, cancels the
purchase?
There is definite tension between Michael and Nikita. It's clear she
is torn between trusting Michael and hurting her father. Her back is
to Michael.
Michael: We'll think of another
plan.
Nikita: Like what?
Michael: I don't know.
Nikita: He's my father, Michael.
Michael: He hasn't been much of
one.
Nikita: I won't hand him over to
the Collective to be tortured and killed.
Michael thinks of this, but will not budge.
Michael: Adam's my son. I won't
let him die.
He moves to stand at her side, handing her gun to her.
Michael: We have to go.
She looks up at him, and they just look into each other's eyes for a
long time, before she stands, snatches the gun out of his hand, and
walks off. Michael follows, carrying a small, black bag.
GRAFF WEAPON PURCHASE
We see a huge abandoned warehouse. Michael and Nikita are hidden in
an upper level where they have a good view of the empty warehouse
below. Nikita mans a long-range rifle with scope and silencer
attached, while Michael stands beside her, watching for Graff.
Bay doors open and vehicles drive inside, two vans followed by a
limo. Nikita looks through her scope, which has infrared-type ability,
allowing her to see inside the black-tinted limo windows. She sees
Graff seated in the back seat. Men begin emerging from the vans, guns
in hand. The limo driver gets out, rounds the front of the limo and
meets up with the other men from the vans, approximately ten men are
in the area.
As Michael and Nikita watch the men in the distance below them,
Michael starts to move off.
Michael: I'll get a different
angle.
He leaves, while Nikita continues to focus her site on Graff, still
inside the limo.
The men below complete their transaction, and begin to move back to
their respective vehicles. The limo driver goes to Graff's side of the
limo. The window lowers, showing Graff clearly.
Nikita: I've got a clear shot.
The limo driver hands something over to Graff, who says:
Graff: Good, good.
Just then, Nikita fires a shot, but hits the limo driver instead of
Graff. She begins firing on the limo. The other men in the area look
around them, trying to decipher where the shots are coming
from. Nikita shoots the tires out of the limo, while the other men
begin shooting up at her.
Michael appears on the other side of the warehouse, moving quickly
down metal stairs and firing one shot after another as he does so. One
van manages to get away, though the remaining men are all killed by
Michael and Nikita. Nikita then rushes from her hiding spot on the
upper level, moving to the limo to be sure Graff is dead. Michael gets
to Graff's door, just as Nikita gets to the opposite door. They open
the doors at the same time, their guns drawn. We see that Graff is
upright, but dead. Nikita looks across Graff to Michael, who only
looks at Graff. Nikita shuts the door on her side, while Michael
shoots two more shots into Graff, before closing his door, and moving
off.
Nikita stands there, clearly surprised by this, before she also moves
off.
MUNITIONS
Jason walks through the Main Area, passing by Munitions, when Walter
sees him.
Walter: Hey, Jas.
Jason stops.
Walter: Jas!
Jason then heads into Munitions.
Walter: You, uh... taking care of
what we talked about?
Jason: Sort of.
Walter: Sort of?
Jason: It's complicated.
Walter: Oh... yeah... all
right... you can do it, right?
Jason: (distant and
noncommittal) I don't know yet.
Walter: (confused) You mean
you don't know how you're gonna do it, or... if you want to do it?
Jason: Look, Walter, don't lay a
guilt-trip on me, all right? You and my brother may have been close,
but you and I don't go back that far.
Walter: I don't care how far back
we go, if Myra gets the job, I'm dead!
Walter is incredulous, but Jason is unconcerned.
Walter: Keep her out of the Perch!
Jason: I can't. Mr. Jones has
given her control of Comm. That means he's already made up his
mind. Best I can do right now is cover my own ass.
Walter: So, you think you're smart
just taking care of numero uno?
Jason: What else can you do in a
place like this?
Walter: You take care of your
friends, and your friends take care of you!
Jason: (chuckling) You're
kidding, right?
Walter: Your brother gave his life
to save everybody else's here. Anybody ever tell you that?
Jason: (stubborn) I'm not
my brother.
Walter: (smiles) You
know... I'm kinda glad that he never really got to know you.
He gives Jason a once-over.
Walter: He would have been
ashamed.
Walter walks off, further into the Munitions area, while Jason
saunters out.
ABANDONED BUILDING
We now see that Michael had chained Haled man inside a room to two
pipes connected to a concrete wall. The door of the room opens, and
Graff's dead body is thrown inside by Michael. Michael walks up to
Haled.
Michael: We've done our part. Now
I want my son.
From the door, Nikita watches.
Haled: I have to go back to the
Collective to assume command. When that's settled, I'll deliver the
boy.
Michael: How long?
Haled: I'll contact you on an open
channel.
Michael thinks about this a moment, then uncuffs the man's hands. As
the man walks out the door, Michael calls to him. Haled stops.
Michael: Haled.
The man turns.
Michael: Section's intel base is
thorough.
Haled: What of it?
Michael: Recently you moved your
family to Tunisia, a small village called Mendinee.
The man gets the message. He leaves. Michael walks over to Nikita.
Nikita: What now?
Michael: Release Jones. Take him
back to Section.
Nikita: Are you sure?
Michael: I need Section resources
to provide security for Adam's return. Jones will tell them to
cooperate.
Nikita: After all we've done, I'm
not so sure.
It's clear that Nikita is not sure she did the right thing by helping
Michael, but that she trusted him enough to do so. Michael is also
aware of her conflicting feelings.
Michael: He claims Section exists
to protect the innocent. Let him prove it.
SECTION
We see several shots of Section, seeing that all areas are full of
operatives busily working. In the Perch, Mr. Jones speaks with
Myra. In Comm, Jason sits a laptop, when an incoming message arrives
from the Collective.
Jason: Michael.
Michael sits at a computer, undisclosed location.
Michael: Yes.
Jason: It's from the Collective. A
location.
Michael accesses the information from his computer, reads it, then
stands and moves off quickly. From the Perch, Mr. Jones looks over to
Jason, and exchanges a look.
ADAM RETRIEVAL
Michael and Nikita, both wearing black, knee-length coats walk through
the snow, heading toward a location where Adam is being held. Jason
monitors them from Comm.
Jason: You're in the grid. All
clear. Coordinates indicate a small structure at the north end of the
park.
Michael: Is the path still clear?
Jason: I'm sweeping now. Exterior
looks good.
Nikita: What about inside the
structure?
Jason: Infrared indicates warmth.
Nikita: A person?
Jason: Most likely.
Jason's laptop beeps. He looks over his shoulder.
Jason: Quinn?
Quinn: Yes?
Jason: I'm getting a reading here,
but the intensity's diminishing.
His monitor shows a round red area slowly becoming blue. Quinn slides
her chair over to see what he's looking at.
Quinn: It's cooling down.
Jason: Cooling down?
Quinn: What is it?
Jason: It should be Adam.
Quinn: Not anymore.
Jason: What do you mean?
Quinn: Temperature read
out. Whoever it is, it's been dead at least a half-hour.
Jason: Oh no.
At the park, Michael and Nikita get to the structure and enter
inside. They enter a public bathroom with a long row of
stalls. Slowly, Michael walks past each stall, Nikita following. They
glance into each stall they pass, finding each one empty. As they get
closer to the last stall, Michael sees blood and stops, before slowly
moving closer toward it. When he gets to the stall, he sees that Haled
is dead on the floor. Michael closes his eyes in relief, and Nikita
hangs her head before shaking it. Again, they have been duped, and are
no closer to Adam.
Michael steps away from the body and begins walking out of the
bathroom. His pace is much quicker.
Michael: I have to find out who's
in charge now, and negotiate with them.
Nikita: What do you have to
negotiate with?
Michael: Whatever they want.
He shoves open a door that leads to the outside, only to find they are
surrounded by Section operatives, armed and waiting to take them back
to Section.
Michael and Nikita survey the many operatives, seeing they are
outnumbered.
Operative: Jones wants you back in
Section. Now.
MUNITIONS
Walter stands in Munitions watching Myra in Comm, where she is
speaking to Jason. She is laughing.
Myra: So did you have any luck
with the list?
She sits at the edge of his desk.
Jason: Not yet.
Walter continues to watch.
Myra: Did you get done what I
asked you to get done?
They continue speaking, and she laughs now and then, but the
perspective is from Walter's view from Munitions.
Then, footsteps sound and Myra looks up to find two operatives, one of
them is Mentz, have approached.
Operative: Come with us, please.
Myra looks at them confused, clears her throat, but doesn't fight them
taking her away. As she is led out, Walter frowns with confusion,
while Jason looks over to Walter slyly. Walter walks over to
Jason. Jason turns back to his work.
Walter: What was that about?
Jason: I guess they found
something in her file they didn't like.
He looks up at Walter blandly.
Walter: You have anything to do
with it?
Jason maintains his fickle manner.
Jason: No. Why would I?
Walter thinks about this a moment, grinning.
Walter: My mistake.
As Walter walks away with a smile, Jason watches him leave with a grin
on his face.
WHITE ROOM
Michael sits, restrained in the chair, when the door opens allowing
Mr. Jones into the room. An operative also enters and takes a stand
behind the chair.
Michael: Have you heard from the
Collective?
Mr. Jones: No. They're obviously
going through a change of leadership. Their behavior will therefore be
erratic for some time.
Michael: Adam?
Mr. Jones: They still have
him. They've moved their base, so we don't know where they're keeping
him. There is one hope. I could contact them through an open channel
and offer to exchange you for Adam.
Michael: Why would they accept?
Mr. Jones: Well, now that I am out
of reach, it will let them save face and give them your complete
knowledge of Section.
Michael: Why would you permit it?
Mr. Jones: Because you will commit
suicide rather than give them that knowledge.
Michael: They'll be watching for
that.
Mr. Jones holds up a small oval-shaped, white plastic piece.
Mr. Jones: This contains a
membrane, which fits the roof of the mouth virtually undetectable. You
press it hard with your tongue for five seconds. Five seconds later,
you are dead.
He and Michael regard each other calmly.
Mr. Jones: You will now give me
your word that you will use it the minute you know that Adam is safe.
Michael doesn't hesitate.
Michael: You have my word.
Mr. Jones now nods to the operative behind the chair, who releases
Michael's wrist restraints. Mr. Jones hands the plastic membrane to
Michael, who takes it, looks at it, then gets up from the chair and
moves out.
OPERATIONS' LOFT
Mr. Jones stands before a wall monitor, when Nikita walks up behind
him.
Nikita: Very clever.
He inclines his ear toward her, but doesn't look at her.
Nikita: What? You think you found
a way to kill Michael that I'll find acceptable?
Mr. Jones: It is important to save
the boy.
Nikita: The Collective have
promised to let Adam go twice. Twice, they haven't done it. Why
should it be any different this time?
Mr. Jones now turns to face her.
Mr. Jones: It is Adam's only
chance, and Michael has agreed.
Nikita: Michael doesn't have a
choice! You do.
Mr. Jones: (laughs) My dear
girl, none of us have a choice. Least of all, me.
As she faces her father, her eyes fill with tears.
Nikita: Do you think with Michael
gone, I'm gonna stay and run Section?
Mr. Jones: Well, we'll see.
A beeping sounds and he turns to look back to his monitor, while
Nikita watches his back with defiant tears, shaking her head.
Mr. Jones: Ah. An answer's coming
through from the Collective.
Nikita: (grits out) Never
gonna happen.
Mr. Jones: We'll see.
ADAM/MICHAEL EXCHANGE
It's a cold, clear day outside, and we see a long, white bridge. On
one end of the bridge, seven Collective men stand with Adam in their
center, while on the other end, only Michael and Nikita approach the
opposite end. As the walk, Michael looks across the long distance to
Adam, while Nikita walks, wearing her sunglasses, and looking over to
Michael.
They continue to walk together, walking onto the bridge.
Michael: You'll take care of Adam?
Nikita: I will.
They stop now, and Michael turns and faces Nikita. She does the
same. She wears her sunglasses, but he does not. He just looks at her,
seeing her for the last time.
Michael: Goodbye, Nikita.
Nikita: Goodbye, Michael.
Again, he just looks at her. The feeling is one of sadness, both
knowing it's over between them. Michael holds out his gloved hand to
her and she takes it, lifting it up to her lips, then covering it with
her other hand. Michael remains strong, no emotion evident.
Nikita: Goodbye.
He then turns from her to start heading across the bridge alone. A
voice calls out.
Mr. Jones: There's one last
complication.
Michael stops and looks back. Nikita is also surprised. Mr. Jones
stands there with four operatives. Mr. Jones hobbles closer to Michael
and Nikita.
Mr. Jones: I'm afraid I lied.
He comes closer to them, and they wait to hear him.
Mr. Jones: It is not you they
want. It's me.
Nikita starts with surprise, but stills immediately.
Mr. Jones: I do apologize for this
whole charade, but you see, I had to make it appear convincing. We
were under constant observation by my colleagues, and they certainly
wouldn't allow me to give myself up.
Michael and Nikita listen.
Mr. Jones: So, it all comes down
to you, Nikita. I need your promise that you will return to Section
and become Operations, and eventually take over for me, as I had
always planned.
Michael looks at Nikita, who is frowning and feeling the
walls close up on her.
Mr. Jones: I cannot go, if you
don't say yes.
He holds out his gloved hand, and within his palm lies the command key
to Section. She hesitates, looking to her father a moment, before
reaching out and taking the key from his hand. Michael understands
that she has now made up her mind, and he looks to her as she says:
Nikita: Yes.
Mr. Jones: (smiles and
nods) Good. One day you will realize it is the right decision.
Her manner indicates that her decision was based on having no
alternative. She looks at the command key in her hand.
Mr. Jones: Always trust your
father.
He smiles at her, and then begins to hobble forward to exchange
himself for Adam. As he passes by Michael, Mr. Jones places a hand on
his shoulder then continues down the bridge toward the Collective men.
Holding the key in her hand, Nikita and Michael and the other
operatives watch Mr. Jones walk down the bridge. A poignant song plays
in the background. Michael watches as Adam is released and begins to
head down the bridge toward the other side. Michael walks closer down
the bridge to wait for Adam.
The song says: I awake to find no peace of mind...
Adam passes Mr. Jones on the bridge. As Adam gets closer, Michael
calls to him.
Michael: Adam!
Adam looks up and recognizes Michael.
Adam: Daddy?
Then he fully recognizes Michael.
Adam: Daddy! Daddy!
He begins running for Michael. Michael crouches, embracing his son in
his arms. Michael's face is happy and relieved to have his son, while
in the distance Nikita watches them, her sadness and sacrifice
evident.
As Michael holds Adam to him, we see Mr. Jones is now standing before
the Collective men. They raise their guns and shoot him down.
Nikita's head jerks up at the sound of the shots, and she sees her
father drop unceremoniously to the ground, dead. She lunges forward,
but an operative holds her back. Michael stands, seeing Mr. Jones get
killed, and he looks back to Nikita, who breathes hard with emotion.
The Collective men walk away leaving Mr. Jones on the ground. Nikita
pulls free from the operatives grasp, and looks down the bridge where
her father is sprawled face-down on the bridge. She is stunned.
TRAIN STATION
Adam sits on a bench next to Michael in the train station. Michael
looks over to his left and sees Nikita approaching. He stands and
waits for her to get to him. As she walks up, she removes her
sunglasses. He looks her directly in the eyes, and she returns the
look. She then glances over to Adam, and smiles painfully.
Nikita: Take him as far away from
here as possible.
Adam smiles in return and looks away.
Nikita: Help him forget.
She looks back to Michael, who searches her face, reading all she is
saying in her simple words.
Michael: He'll be all right.
She changes the subject, trying to be brave.
Nikita: According to my father, I
was born for this.
Michael understands that she is hurting. He seeks to reassure her.
Michael: There'll be a time when
Adam won't need me anymore.
His voice is quiet and emotion-filled as he speaks.
Nikita: You know where I am.
They search each other's faces for a long moment, before Michael leans
in and kisses her. She looks into his eyes.
Nikita: I love you.
This does him in, and he takes her in his embrace, inclining his face
into the side of her neck, as he fights to keep his own resolve. His
manner is sad and his voice thick with emotion as he speaks into her
ear.
Michael: I love you.
Nikita closes her eyes, as does Michael, and they are reluctant to
pull apart. Michael finally steps back, only to keep his face close to
her as he searches her face. He touches his forehead to hers, and it's
clear they do not want to leave each other. Nikita closes her eyes,
holding onto the moment any way she can. When Michael steps away to
gather Adam, reaching for his son with one hand, Nikita retains hold
of his other hand until she has to let go.
Michael looks to her again. Now Nikita's eyes are filled with
tears. He pulls his hand from hers, needing to leave, and as he and
Adam walk away, Nikita's glance follows them. Her face crumples
tearfully, and she looks down.
We see her standing alone in the huge station, and when we see her
face again, tears are rolling down her cheeks. She puts her glasses
on, trying to compose herself.
The scene of her crying switches to her standing calmly and without
expression. We see she is in Operations Loft, where she is now in
command. She stands at window looking at Section below, her hands
behind her back.
She has lost everything that she loved to gain control of everything
else.
The End.
