FOOD

Nikita's apartment. The bedroom. Nikita is asleep. Sounds come from another room. The kitchen.
She opens her eyes alertly. Then she relaxes and closes them again.

Gray walks into the room carrying a tray with a cooked breakfast on it. She opens her eyes again and sees him looking directly at her.

Gray : Hi there, honey. Hungry?

Nikita : Ravenous. Always hungry for more. And looking forward to eating as well.

Nikita sits up in the bed and he passes her the tray.He sits next to her.

Gray : Any plans today? Remember I have a meeting at a clients office in two hours. The It should take a couple of more hours. After that, do you want to meet for lunch?

Nikita : That sounds great. My cousin Michael is in town again, so I'll see him for a coffee and then see you later on.

Gray : Beautiful. It's a date.

Nikita: Yes, darling, it's a date.

Briefing room at Section. Operations, and at the table from Operations' view are Walter, Nikita, Michael, Birkoff. The screen shows a man's face. The name underneath is Daniel Hands.

Operations : The group NGMF, which means No Genetically Modified Food is going to protest outside the Codswallen farms in Northern England that grow them. Section doesn't usually follow these groups as they are themselves usually quite timid and just make noise and hardly ever disturb the peace. We have received Intel that they a leader of this group, Daniel Hands, has contacted a small-arms dealer. This dealer usually handles pistols and rifles but is also known to handle flame-throwers. Nikita and Walter, you two will disguise yourselves as protesters at the farms and find out exactly what weapons they have. You leave for the train station in tomorrow morning. More Intel is on your panels.

Camera focuses in on Nikita and Walter sitting next to each other.

La Femme Nikita credits are shown.

Walter and Nikita sitting on a train.

Nikita : Why are we catching the train, Walter? Why not airlift us close by or maybe within driving distance anyway?

Walter : Because, Sugar, we want to be seen. With the number of people going there this week we may need proper cover for our movements. Just young youth, that's you. And her old hippie uncle, that's me. We heard about the protest and decide to leave France for a few weeks and join the protest. People are coming from all over the world and it seems a pretty good bet that some are from the same place we are. Since this group has jumped into the big league, their security may have jumped up as well.

Nikita : Oh, all right. So Uncle Walter, we get off at London and travel any way we can to the northern lands of England?

Walter : Yep, that's the plan sugar. We have a couple of days to get there so just relax and treat it as a vacation.

Nikita : Oh, yes, I am. I am glad to be away from Section, but not Gray. I miss him already.

Walter : Yes, Gray. Nikita, I've told you before. Don't get too involved with people outside of Section, nothing good ever grows out of mixing with those outside.

Nikita : Is that from personal experience, Walter? Or just the party line that Section feeds us operatives? You know. "Don't mix with outside because only pain will come from it. If you tell someone, they won't know the good we do so they will only see the bad." Stuff like that?

Walter : Yes, sugar. Personal experience. And stuff like that.

Nikita : Care to tell me a bit about it, Uncle Walt?

Walter : Not at this time, Nikita. Maybe later.

He turns away and stares out the window at the moving countryside.

Section. Operations and Madeline are at a table and have just finished eating as meal.

Madeline : Christopher has done it again. Another good meal.

Operations : Yes, maybe that's why we chose him.

He chuckles slightly and Madeline joins in with a slight chuckle as well.

Operations : Nikita is not handling her situation with Gray Wellman to our satisfaction. Should we interfere?

Madeline : No, not yet. I think that sooner or later she will see the error in continuing in seeing him.

Operations : Very well. We shall let it go for now, but we may have to do something if it doesn't change. Now tell me how Ferrerra's mission in Budapest went.

Nikita, Walter and two other men and a woman are on the back of a truck. One of the men was a passenger on the train that Nikita and Walter were on.

Man : (In a speech-like voice) So we must put an end to the growth of these crops because of the chemicals they use and which are easily spread to other nearby farms. And that's my speech so far. I hope I get a chance to say it to more people. I hope the world hears the message we want to get across.

Nikita and Walter nod their heads in agreement.

The truck stops. The group gets off. The driver gets out and points down a side road.

Driver : Down that way about three kilometers I think. I'm sure you'll see others there so it should be easy to find. Hope it goes well for you. Be seeing you.

Goodbyes and thanks from all. They then start walking down the road that the driver pointed to. Walter and Nikita are about 10 meters behind the others.

Nikita : How did you get started in Section, Walter. What were you doing before they got you?

Walter : I won't tell you much, Nikita. Let's just say that what we are doing this week is what I was doing nearly 40 years ago. Not protesting about GM foods and pollution like they do now, but the racial issues of the time and police brutality and things. Then something went wrong at one time and a mob started. Me and three others somehow controlled the situation so it only became a fight between ten or so of us protesters and some police. After that, one of the others, an English woman found out where I was living and came to see me. From there Section life, for me, started. No fake death. No funeral. No family cried for me. Just not in, then in. I willingly joined Section. Some of us do that, you know.

Nikita : Why? Why didn't you stay outside?

Walter : I saw where the life I was leading then would have led me. The drugs, the alcohol, fighting for no real cause. No, we were fighting for causes we believed in but in the wrong way. Some started carrying weapons and I was not into that. We thought we could beat the system. But there is always some sort of system. Someone always ahead of you or someone always better than you. I just found what this woman said to be a way to fight, with weapons if necessary, those that were truly against the way of life everyone in the world should have. Did you know that those operatives that join willingly are those that survive the longest. No. No, that's wrong. Those that join or those that truly believe in what we do, survive the longest. All for now, sugar.

He points ahead to the other group. They have met up with another group of about eight protesters. They came from a side road. Some of them have met before and we hear the hellos and introductions. Walter and Nikita join in.

Section Comm.

Birkoff : Satellite picture coming in now, Michael. Coming onto screen now.

Michael walks over and looks at the screen. It shows a farm area with a large crowd of people.

Michael : Good. Are you in contact with Nikita or Walter yet?

Birkoff : Yes, both reported in a few minutes ago when the satellite feed was in place. Right on time as well. Nothing to report as yet, but they will tell us if something arises.

Operations comes over.

Operations : Michael, Birkoff will call us when needed,. Right now, we have to go over the next phase of the Budapest mission. We have lost three operatives there and our options may have changed.

Michael : Yes.

They walk away.

Walter and Nikita amongst a crowd of protesters. Chants and shouts. Seven police are there, all standing together. A small stage is seen. The man that was with them before has just finished his speech. Applause and shouts. Another man gets onto the stage and speaks into the microphone. It is Daniel Hands.

Daniel : Thank you for coming here this week. The farm directly behind me is producing genetically modified grain. One thousand acres of wheat and corn. This farm borders three other farms that do not use GM crops. But the seeds from these GM crops spread when the wind blows. They say the seeds cannot be blown by the winds and cannot directly affect any neighboring crops. We believe this to be false. They say producing these crops will help mankind and be beneficial for the future. We believe this to be false. Mankind was not meant to play with their food. It is supposed to be grown naturally. What the Earth gives us naturally is what we should eat. Not this man-made garbage. There is only one way to stop this. That is to destroy the crops.

Shouts of agreement. Loud shouts. Almost mob-like. Daniel points to some vans parked nearby.

Daniel : Those of you that are brave enough. We have some flame weapons in the van. Some barrels of gasoline as well. We must destroy these crops. Fire is the only way to completely destroy this abomination.

Some of the protesters have made their way to where the police are. They suddenly produce pistols and capture the police. Some others have moved over to the van where they are passed flame- throwers. Nikita is amongst this crowd. Most of the crowd is awe- struck at what is happening but do not do anything about it. But some still shout approval of the events unfolding.

Nikita : Wow. The Argessi type flame-thrower. A nice piece of machinery.

A man hears her.

Man : What do you know about them? Can you use them?

Nikita : My uncle showed me. He was in the army in the sixties and seventies and still gets access to new weapons. Just to handle, we don't have any ourselves though. But I do know how to use it.

Michael (voice) : Yes, Nikita. Audio through both Walter and you and also a visual feed by satellite. We see four flame-weapons. Is this correct?

Nikita : Only four? They do have a range of 40-50 meters when primes well but only four?

Man : Only four here but another ten in some more vans a mile or two away.

He offers her the weapon. Nikita takes it and pretends to handle it in a knowledgeable but wary way.

Nikita : My uncle is here as well. Do you want me to find him? Man : Yes. What does he look like?

Walter : Like me, man. Just like me. Hi, sugar. See you found something more interesting than plain old boring speeches and garbage. Glad to see. And these Argessi's are pretty good. What's the plan, man?

Man : You two seem to have some knowledge. Could you teach some of these others to use them. In about twenty minutes? No fire as yet. Just show them how to point and shoot and also how much kick they have. Okay?

Nikita : Yes.
Walter : Yep.

Nikita and Walter are handed a weapon each and they turn towards the small crowd near the vans, looking for people to teach.

Nikita : Walter, should we pick the idiots or those that we need to keep an eye on.

Walter : I'd say the eyes have it, babe. Most of them look pretty scared anyway but want to be a part of something. If we get some of the main trouble makers away then we can sort them out further.

Nikita and Walter are teaching about ten people to handle the weapons. Walter grabs one of them by the arms and pushes. Showing the force of the weapon'backfire. Nikita is watching the people from a few meters away.

Nikita : Michael? Any ideas as to what we do now?

Michael : You cannot allow them to use these flame weapons. Too much damage could ensue. How are the police contained?

Nikita : They were put in a van. I could try and help them escape.

She looks over at the van where the police were put. Three guards stand around it. She sees four of the crowd overpower the guards and free the policemen from inside. The guards are knocked unconscious and put in the van. A very professional takeover. The police take the coats and jackets from them.

Nikita : Michael. Looks like the police had some undercover people here. They have just freed the uniformed police. And disguised themselves with coats and jackets. Michael : Good. Is there any way you can tell them that you are on their side?

Nikita : We can try. Four of them are coming over here to Walter and me. The others are going to the men with the other weapons.

When the four arrive, Nikita walks over to them with a flamethrower.

Nikita : Glad to see some more able-bodied men here.

Two of them get so close she can feel them wanting to grab the weapon.

Nikita : (softly, while showing them the weapon) Don't try for the weapon, guys. Me and my uncle are on your side. I know you are either undercover cops or something and saw you at the van. These weapons are under control. It's the other two and then another ten coming soon that are the main worry now.

The men signal that they understand and continue to watch her teach them. The other undercover group are handling the weapons. They look over to where Nikita is. Some sort of signal may have been given as they look away again. All four weapons are in the hands of the good guys.

Nikita : When the van arrives with the other flamers, maybe one of you undercovers can get to it somehow and take it.

They nod their heads, looking as though they were learning something. A big van comes up to the area where this training is happening. One of the undercovers from the other group and two from Nikita's go to the van. As if to get handed the weapons. Two overpower the driver and the third jumps into the van disarming the man there. The van drives off. Fast. Daniel Hands has been walking around checking on the crowd and when the van drives off, he knows something is wrong. He runs over to the other group and grabs a flamethrower. He aims and shoots at the van. A big flame goes towards it, but it is out of range. He shouts.

Daniel : What is happening? Those with the flame throwers. Use them. Now!! Aim at the wheat. Aim at the crop. Now!!

He starts firing into the crops. Some of it lights up. Nikita and Walter do not shoot. Neither does an undercover man who has a flamethrower. Daniel Hands is the only one firing. The flame starts to spread a little. Then the wind changes. The flames start to spread into the neighboring farms crops. Not into the GM crop. Daniel starts firing into where the flame is strong. Making it stronger and higher. But it is the normal crop. People are noticing this and rush over and stop him.

Shouts of "Idiot" and "Stupid" and other words are heard.

He stops when he notices the crops are on fire. People are rushing to put the flames out. Without the flame throwers fuel, and because the wind changed again, it is quite easy to do. Walter and Nikita look at each other and smile and then walk away together. The undercovers and the police are getting things under control.

Walter and Nikita are in a Section van.

Walter : Yes, sugar. Almost like the good old days. But now you understand. If the leaders of these radical groups are idiots then it just runs down the line. I couldn't be a part of that again. Section people may do wrong things sometimes, but they are not idiots. If they were, I wouldn't be here either. Don't know where I'd be, probably on the street like I nearly was, starving.

Gray's house. Gray and Nikita are in the lounge room.

Gray : Can you tell me where you were this week? And was that your uncle I saw you with? And by the way, I missed having dinner with you.

Nikita : Yep, good old Uncle Walt. So, what's for dinner, honey?

She leans over and kisses him.

End credits.
